Hi, I’m Gillan!
Spearheading promotional strategies for vital health products, alongside a talented team of 3 at the Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics, continues to reinforce something that I have learned throughout my time in the communications industry: resilience.
My career has taken a few unexpected turns over the last decade. Throughout high school and college, I was dedicated to print journalism. I found great satisfaction in telling stories and conveying truth. In my 20s, I was convinced I’d spend my days in a bustling newsroom as managing editor–a position I envisioned holding until my last breath.
But the media landscape shifted dramatically, and still continues to do so. Layoffs became constant, and even with a master’s degree in digital media, I grew uneasy. So, with a heavy heart, I did something I never thought I’d do: I left journalism. It felt like a breakup because telling the truth, sharing stories–that was everything to me.
Soon after leaving the newsroom, I found myself in the world of nonprofit communications, a field I’ve come to love. Over the years, I’ve tackled a wide range of projects, from crafting talking points and internal newsletters for C-suite executives to developing comprehensive communications plans and even launching a learning management system.
